Dealerships vs. Independent Shops (Pros and Cons)

When you need to have your car serviced, how do you make the best decision about which shop to choose?  There are plenty of auto repair shops in Harford County to choose from and a large number of them are dealerships.

To help you decide whether an independently-owned shop or a dealership is right for you, here are the pros and cons of taking your car to an independent.

Pro: Independent shops can usually have your car in and out faster than a dealership can, since there aren’t as many cars scheduled for service each day as there would typically be at a dealership.

Con:  Sometimes an independent shop might have to bring your car to the dealership anyway, since your repair work might require specialized factory tools.

Pro:  Because of our smaller environment, our customers can have a stronger, more personalized report with our service writers and technicians.  If you’ve ever looked around at the dealerships here in Harford County, they are pretty large companies.  Compared to them, many independent shops are much smaller, which gives us an edge in customer service.

Con: Because independent shops work on a variety of makes and models, we don’t have all the factory tools that might be necessary for certain jobs.  We also don’t usually have a parts department like a dealership would, since dealers can stock up on their commonly used car parts.

Pro:  Independent shops typically work on a variety of makes and models, so we can be a one-stop shop for all of your family’s car repair needs, unlike most dealerships.

Con: Independents don’t quite have the same brand familiarity that a dealership should have, since dealership technicians work on the same makes and models all day long.  It can make it tougher for an independent to diagnose and repair more unusual car problems.

Pro:  At an independent shop, you can often spend less money to have your car fixed.  This is because independent shops can usually beat dealership pricing on parts and labor, since we simply don’t have as much overhead.
